Film Blog 2017 (AJ)

The entire film is shot in one huge panning scene, and the camera never leaves the room. This makes sense for the start of the movies opening shot just one large pan across the neighborhood, giving us insight into the plot for the entire movie. We get to see each person living in their natural space, and then onward their development through the film. I think it's an amazing feat Hitchcock has completed managing to capture the entire film is one single panning scene. The commentator makes some excellent points, bringing up how Hitchcock creates more suspense by showing us almost as much as the protagonist, and making us feel as powerless as L.B feels throughout the film, unable to move. This makes the film a million times better, and adds excitement and thrill to watching this, and makes us question the main characters sanity. I think that this film was amazing. I couldn't find a rubric, so I'm just gonna go over things I think were done well and things that could use some work. I think overall our clips were done well and looked really cool. I think the tempo had an even speed and I think I added good effects given the scenes. However, we could have done our storyboard better. In fact, we didn't even have one, so I ended up just throwing something together. I also could've cut up the audio a bit better, but I think it was done well for my first time.

Within the first few seconds of the scene there is an alarm clock sound. This gives context to the husband and wife sleeping on the fire escape. During the panning scene I heard a truck sound. This adds the realism. I heard a trumpet sound when it was focusing on the one dude. This adds a little bit of dry humor to the situation.

One thing I noticed just looking at some little notes of The Odyssey was that the main character, Odysseus, main enemy before the events of The Odyssey was Poseidon, and at the end of the movie they are saved by a flood in the valley. I don't know if it was on accident or if it was for irony, but it was a nice touch. Another thing that was clear to notice was the reference to the Cyclops in the movie. He was referenced twice, and we were told in class that this was a direct reference to The Odyssey . Through the movie the "Cyclops" seems to have a main goals of ending our "heroes" journey. He's a constant obstacle like I'm sure he is in The Odyssey. Finally, the blind black man in the film was a direct reference to Teiresais in The Odyssey . Teiresais is a blind prophet of Apollo, sent to explain to Odysseus how to get back to his home and his fate.
